Maria and her sisters
Continuation of Chapter 3 - The Poor Johnsons
Chapter 4 – The wild escape
‘Don’t you dare touch my sisters!’ cried out Reema. She then made a
sudden movement. Before Malnis could realize it, Reema had wrenched her sisters
free and made a bolt for the door. The sisters followed suit. Malnis recovered from his shock soon and followed them. Before they reached
the door, Malnis got Maria, who was not a fast runner. ‘No you don’t!’ screamed Reema and slapped Malnis with all the strength she could muster. He staggered backwards, holding his right cheek where there was going to be a permanent hand sign and when he came to full
consciousness, they were gone. He screamed ‘NOOOO!’.
Reema found herself utterly helpless. Her sisters were looking at her
as if expecting her to give instructions as to what should be done next. Maria
said after a long silence, ‘That was a pretty good AND wild escape.’ Reema and
Jose fell to laughing, it seemed ages ago that they had to follow Malnis’s orders
and suffer. After they had stopped laughing, it was already daybreak and they
had no money and nothing to eat, and they felt thirsty after all that laughing.
The street on which they had arrived was dark except for one house whose light
was still flickering. They decided to ask the owner of that house for help.
When they knocked on the door, a round-bellied, cheery looking man opened the
door. As soon as he saw them, his first expression was shock, and then he fell
to laughing. He laughed so heartily that Maria began to cry out of pure
nervousness. He took no notice of Maria and said, ‘Oh, my lucky stars! The
prophecy is true! And,’-he counted that how many were the sisters-‘Yes! Three,
as I expected!’ Then he turned to the sisters and said, ‘Young ladies, I was
waiting for you come, now you ca-’ ’How did you expect that we would come?’
Asked bold Jose. ‘Never mind that, just come in and rest, you might have had a
rough journey…, by the way, I’m Prist.’ Both Reema and Jose sensed the
annoyance in the way he spoke, and decided to keep shut. But Maria let out an
endless stream of questions, which annoyed Prist even more, but he did not
throw them out. He led them to a beautiful room, which had three beds, a
window, some lady clothes and some food on the small table which was in the
middle of the room. The chairs had been set up neatly, but everything except
the food was covered in dust. The sisters seated themselves on the dusty chairs
and ate. Maria asked halfway through her bread, ‘I wonder wether he will ask us
for rent?’ Reema was worried about the same thing. Then suddenly Prist
appeared, holding three small mattresses and blankets. ‘Cuddle yourself in
these blankets. We will clean your room tomorrow. Don’t worry about rent!’ He said good-naturedly. He threw
the blankets on the floor and walked away. The sisters finished their soup,
bread and salad and cuddled themselves to sleep. Reema’s last, dreamy thought
was ‘What in the world was he talking about? Prophecy?’ and she drifted off to
sleep. Jose thought, ‘No rent? Is he mad?’ before drifting to sleep, as for
Maria, she thought nothing…
