Chapter - 3 The poor Johnsons...!

Now as the sisters had become friends, time passed gracefully in the Johnson Hut. Reema had grown quite tall in the 4 years that had passed. She was 22. Jose was 15. Our little Maria was 13 now. Quite sad, Mr. Johnson and Mrs. Johnson both had passed away due to malaria. Reema had married a man called Malnis and had inherited half of her parent’s money. Out of that other half, Jose was given half and Maria had been given half. The house had gone to all of the sisters, and the jewelry was given to Reema, but she was more considerate now, and had divided the jewelry among the sisters. They earned money by working in other’s houses, dusting, cleaning and mopping the house. Maria was given Mr. Aswer and Mr. Paul’s houses to clean. Jose took responsibility of mopping every house in their block, while Reema took up the job of cooking food and cleaning the dishes in every house. Malnis never helped them, and watched with merry at their pitiful condition to earn money. He ordered Reema around the house, pushed Jose, and took Maria’s food when she was about to eat. The sisters could not do anything because Malnis came from a family who were very unkind, and would beat up the sisters if they tried to protest. In their helpless condition, they could only finish their day’s job, hand over the money to Malnis, and cry quietly in a corner, well hidden from view.

Reema had begged Mr. Paul, their neighbor, to let Maria and Jose live in his house, so that they do not have to sustain Malnis and. But Mrs. Paul refused, saying that she already had 5 kids to look after, and could not handle more. Poor heartbroken Reema! She felt all alone in her life. She felt that because of her choice to marry Malnis, their family had gone in a dreadful doom. One day, she had a brilliant idea.

Reema woke up at 7 the next morning. She quietly changed her clothes, put on her hood, and walked out in the stormy morning. She went straight down the road, and stopped at a building which said ‘Lawyer Paradise’. She went inside, and was immediately greeted by a gentleman who looked pretty well-mannered. He said ‘How may I help you ma’am?’ She said, ‘I need a divorce lawyer’’ "Oh no, you don’t worry at all, we have a lot many divorce lawyers" saying this, he whistled and three men appeared. One wore a smart black suit, with a waist pocket in it, and a pocket watch dangling from the pocket of his pant. The second one was a little strange. He was merry, and kept chuckling to himself, and dropping his napkin. The last one was a silent man, with black spectacles covering his eyes, and his hand in his brown pant pocket, with the other hand groping for something in his black coat pocket. Reema chose the one with black spectacles to be her lawyer. By now it was 15 mins done, and she really needed to get home to make breakfast. She thanked the gentlemen, and headed home. She walked up at the front door and opened it. At once Malnis answered. ‘Where did you go, you foul bit of slime!?’Reema was scared. She took a step backward, but Malnis grabbed her by the arm and led her to his room. His (Malnis's) room was very untidy. There were pajamas and sweets and coats and shirts on the damp floor, and packets of bullets in every furniture. There were guns of all brands, shapes, and sizes hanging from the wall, covering it completely. The little visible wall had also been covered with photos of girls and rowdy boys and some elderly mean looking people who were surely his father and mother. So, he closed the door and rounded on her. ‘Where had you BEEN!’ Reema was too scared to answer. ‘Ok, so you won’t answer. I have to force it out of you’. Saying this, he whistled and two muscular men appeared, one holding Jose by her arms, which were pinned to her sides. Another man came holding Maria by her hands, and both were wearing a grin.
