Chapter 2 What Happened

What happened inside the Haunted House, nobody knew, because there came no sound from the house. Even Reema and Jose were starting to get anxious and scared, because THEY were the ones who forced little Maria to go. They decided to check on their own.

They went inside the house and scanned every room, the living room, dining room, kitchen and even the bathroom. But Maria was nowhere to be found. “Let’s search the top floor” said a scared Jose. Reema agreed, and when they got upstairs, they screamed at the top of their lungs, which made the other neighbours hurry to the house.

A tall, dark creature was boring down upon them, as if trying to eat them. Reema and Jose wanted to run, but their legs were paralyzed with fear. Then the creature moved backwards, and Reema and Jose, without stopping to think, grabbed the unconscious Maria from behind it and started to run away but slammed headfirst into the villagers and dropped unconscious on the floor.

“What happened?” Reema asked weakly from the bed. “Hush, dear, nothing so serious.” said Mother.” Just the ghost was not a ghost, it was a wanted criminal who lived there for ages. He had seen Little Daisy”-Mother used to call Maria ‘Daisy’ sometimes-“And Daisy had seen his true identity, so he grabbed her and kept her with him. Then he decided not to kill her because then he will have to leave as her soul would float there. But then you turned up looking for her and your scream reached the villagers. They were just in time to pull you away from the man.”

And Mother broke off. “I am s-s-sorry m-mother. I told M-M-Maria to go l-l-l-looking for the-the b-ball i-in the Haun-Haun-Haunted house” and Reema burst into tears. Her voice woke up Jose, and at precise moment Maria came in the room, not looking angry or forgiving, but tearful to see her sisters lying like that because of her. Reema sobbed, “Oh sorry Maria, I forced you to go, I’m so sorry!” Maria looked aghast. “No, Didi, no, please don’t cry, Mother will not scold you.” Jose too stammered her apologies and for once the sisters were friends, though they did not get their ball back..
