Maria and her sisters
Continuation of Ch - 6 The peace and sorrow
The broken glass
Reema was getting worried about her
sisters. Jose wasn’t waking up, and Maria hadn’t returned from wherever she
went. Reema suddenly felt the same helplessness, and the same loneliness revolve
around her. She shakily took a kitchen knife with her, and left the house, but
returned immediately when she heard a groan.
Jose was waking up dizzily, and seemed to faint again. Reema
quickly brought some cold, tinned soup, but Jose didn’t react to it, so Reema
boiled the soup till it was hot. Jose drank it in a gulp. Then she said to
Reema, “Thank you. I’m better now.” Reema was so happy to see Jose healthy
again that she hugged Jose tight. But to her astonishment, Jose drew back,
scared.
Jose : “I-I am not sure whether you should hug me, dear Lady.”
Reema : “Why do you call me ‘Lady’, Jose? What has happened to you?”
Jose : “You know m-my name??”
Reema : “Why wouldn’t I? I’m your sister…”
Jose : “I don’t have any sister. I’m sorry, you must be mistaken.”
Reema froze. She knew exactly what had happened to Jose. Jose had
lost her memory, she didn’t know anything about Reema and Maria now.
But then she suddenly sh00k her head
with vigorous force and then said, “Brrr. I am cold, but I feel like I’ve drank
a whole bowl of soup. And, oh! Hi, Reema!” Reema didn’t recount the terrible
scene in which Jose lost her mind, afterwards. Reema instead said, “You better
now?” Jose said, “Yes…?” Reema said, “I need you help! Maria hasn’t come back
and it’s dawn…”
Reema, saying this, began to form
possible explanations, and some were so terrible, that Reema began to cry. Jose
controlled the poor, heartbroken soul, with a motherly attitude. She crooned, “There
there, darling! Don’t waste your precious tears!” As soon as she said that, a
drop of a sparkling tear fell on Reema’s hand, and it rolled away. Jose cried
out, “Look there! On your hand!”
