Maria and her sisters
Continuation of Chapter 5 - What now?
Chapter 6 – The peace and sorrow
Reema, Jose and Maria had escaped in a city called Amsterdam, and had
rented a house with all the money they could get from doing chores. The week
they had escaped, their hands were smooth and soft. But at the end of the week
their hands were unrecognizable with work – dirty, patched, bandaged hands.
Ash-smitten faces. Expression of sorrow. Red eyes due to silent, well-hidden
tears. Legs tired of walking. But they never gave up.
They were always on the lookout, for they very well knew that Malnis
would be after them. Reema was so anxious and scared that she was always on her
feet, and she fled when she found someone suspicious. Jose was nervous and pale
with fear, that she couldn’t digest food. She took to being ill, and lay in bed
half the time, getting up only to vomit and to use the bathroom. Maria tried to
bring joy in her sisters’s life, but she never could. Her dear comfort was criticizing Malnis with
every hateful word she could think of, and imagining him being squashed under
Reema’s feet.
Once Maria decided to do some jobs, as “A small help to the family”
as she stated it. She packed some bread, a small container of milk, the last
one left, and some cheese. Then she stepped out of the house and looked for
jobs. She went to the barber’s first, but was taken aback when she saw Malnis
staring at her through the excellently transparent glass window.
