PNG vs LPG

The full form of LPG is Liquefied Petroleum Gas & PNG is Piped Natural Gas. As the name itself says that LPG is supplied through cylinders & PNG through pipes. LPG is not natural gas but it is derived from natural gas processing.

PNG is better than LPG when it comes to delivery through pipes, cost and the fact that it produces slightly less COwhen burned. But when it comes to higher energy content and portability, LPG is better than PNG.

A 14.2kg subsidized domestic LPG cylinder costs Rs 700 (Period of 45 days). The same period required for PNG is 15 SCM (Standard Cubic Meters), which comes at a price of Rs 28/SCM, which gives a total of Rs 420 (including taxes).

Note: The above consumption analysis is based on my (family of 4 people) PNG meter reading and bills raised by MNGL. Period of analysis is 3 years.

There is also a one time security deposit of Rs 6500 in case of PNG. In case of LPG, the deposit for 2 cylinders is around Rs 3000.

Customers are not charged for laying of the pipeline network up to the appliance along with necessary fittings, pressure regulator, meter and conversion of LPG appliance to PNG.
